The project “Birds of Cluj live” implemented by the “Apáthy István Egyesület” Society offers the possibility to follow live, day and night on the webpage of the project, www.clujbird.ro, the life of a common kestrel family inside the nest. The camera is installed nearby the nest located below the roof of a block of flats from Mănăștur, Cluj. Due to the orientation of the nest, the activity inside it can be followed especially in the afternoons and evenings.
The common kestrel is one of the many species of birds (among others like gulls, tits, owls, woodpeckers) adapted to the urban habitats and form an important part of the biodiversity of cities and towns. As a diurnal raptor it hunts on insects, small rodents, sometimes frogs and lizards. The species is protected both by the national and international legislation.
The objective of the project financed by the City Hall and Local Council of Cluj-Napoca is to raise awareness of citizens towards the biodiversity of the city, precisely towards birds. The project sustains the candidation of Cluj-Napoca to the title of European Capital of Culture 2021.
